Domestic PEP examples that surprise real estate agents
Domestic PEPs are prominent public positions in Australia, and the surprise for an agency is that the buyer looks like any other local purchaser.
Quick answer
A domestic PEP is not only a foreign official and not only a federal minister on the news, and the files that surprise a suburban agency are a state member of parliament, a government minister buying through a family trust, a senior judge, and a senior executive of a government-owned business. A mayor is the argument in the sales meeting, and the program’s definition decides it, not the room. This page does not publish a closed list, and the firm emails a link. The client pays.
People search “domestic PEP examples Australia” when an agent treats a sitting state politician as an ordinary buyer because the house is in the electorate. Checked against AUSTRAC’s politically exposed persons guidance on 4 October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice. This page does not reproduce that guidance. What you do after a PEP match is enhanced customer due diligence in Australia. The agency check itself is AML checks for real estate agents. The sector map is /tranche-2.
The buyer who looks ordinary
Agents learn the phrase politically exposed person from foreign-official stories, and domestic PEP examples Australia are closer to the listing. A state member buying a house in their own name, a minister using a discretionary trust, a judge at an auction, or a senior executive of a state-owned corporation buying an investment unit can all be the file. The suburb does not lower the prominence of the role, and the program, read with AUSTRAC’s PEP guidance, decides who is in. This page does not reproduce that guidance.
Some roles are the argument, not the example, and a mayor or a senior local-government figure is the one the sales meeting debates. Do not let the debate replace the definition in the program. A school teacher, a constable, or a junior public servant is not a PEP merely because they are paid by government, and former office-holders can remain relevant for a period the guidance describes. This page does not pick a number of years.
- Domestic means Australia. A foreign PEP page is a different search. The surprise here is an Australian public role on a local contract.
- The trust does not hide the person. If the program says to look at who controls the buying trust, a minister behind it is still the PEP question.
- The house is not the test. A modest suburban purchase does not make a prominent public role ordinary.
- Write the look-up. Record that you asked the PEP question, what you found, and whether enhanced measures applied. A blank means the question was skipped.
Roles agents argue about
Who the customer is on the contract is who is the customer in real estate AML. A family member of a PEP is a wider net and a different page from these examples.
A sorting aid for a suburban agency. This table does not reproduce AUSTRAC’s PEP guidance.
| Person on the file | Why it surprises | What you do not do |
|---|---|---|
| Sitting state member of parliament | The agent knows them as a local, not as a public role | Treat the electorate address as a reason to skip the question |
| Minister buying through a family trust | The contract name is the trust | Stop at the trustee and never ask who is prominent |
| Senior judge, or senior executive of a government-owned business | The purchase looks like any investment unit | Assume PEP means ministers only |
| Mayor, teacher, or former minister | The room will disagree | Let the disagreement replace the program’s definition |
Where the domestic-PEP page stops
This page is the kind of domestic role that surprises an agent. It is not a complete PEP list and it is not the enhanced due diligence procedure. FreeAML does not label a person as a PEP.
What the client pays
On FreeAML the firm suite is A$0. The firm emails the client a link. Verification is client-pays. On the public list a personal KYC check is A$20 and a company or trust KYB check is A$40. Use KYB when the customer is a company or a trust. A PEP flag is not a third list price, and it changes the measures in the program, and any verification is still a client-pays KYC or KYB check. Confirm the live amounts on FreeAML pricing. FreeAML does not decide that a buyer is a domestic PEP or clear a family member.
