The AML/CTF Act is a 2006 Act

The Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act is a 2006 Act. On the Federal Register of Legislation it is Act No. 169 of 2006. That is the year in the short title. The compilation in force when this page was checked on 5 October 2026 was the compilation dated 1 July 2026 to 30 September 2026.

Quick answer

Say 2006, and say which commencement you mean. The Act's name is 2006. The new services a small firm is asking about commenced on 1 July 2026.

Searchers want a year for a citation, a tender, or a training slide. Checked against the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 on the Federal Register of Legislation on 5 October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice. This page does not reproduce that guidance. What the rules instrument is called on this site is the AML/CTF Rules. Who was brought in later is what Tranche 2 is. The date those new services commenced is 1 July 2026. The sector map is /tranche-2.

What the Register shows

The Register titles the statute the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006, No. 169 of 2006. The compilation viewed on 5 October 2026 was marked in force from 1 July 2026 to 30 September 2026. That in-force window is about the compilation, not a claim that the Act expires on 30 September 2026. A later compilation will replace it. If you are quoting the Act in a program, quote the name, the number, and the compilation you actually opened.

This page does not give a day for the bill's first reading or for Royal Assent. Those dates are not what the Register landing page displayed as the answer to “what year”, and inventing them would be worse than stopping at 2006. If a template in your office says the Act was “passed in 2007” or “introduced in 2024”, correct the template. 2024 and 2026 are years people use for the reforms and the commencements. They are not the year in the Act's short title.

Which year belongs in which sentence

  • 2006. The Act's name and number.
  • 31 March 2026. The OAIC describes this as when changes for current reporting entities commenced. It is not the birth of the Act.
  • 1 July 2026. AUSTRAC says the new designated services commenced. Newly regulated businesses had to enrol by 29 July 2026.
  • Your program's date. The day your governing body adopted this version. That date is yours. It is not a commencement of the Act.
  • A course's copyright year. Irrelevant to the citation. Open the Register.

Years people mix up. This table does not reproduce the Act.

Year people sayWhat it can honestly refer toWhat it is not
2006The AML/CTF Act, No. 169 of 2006The start date for a real estate agency's new duties
2024A reform year you should verify in the instrument you citeA reason to rename the 2006 Act
1 July 2026Commencement of the new designated servicesThe year the Act was first made
29 July 2026The enrolment date AUSTRAC published for those new servicesA commencement of customer due diligence, which was 1 July

Put the citation in the program once, in the form the Register uses, and point staff at the in-force compilation rather than at a scanned excerpt in a slide deck. When someone asks “are we under the 2006 Act or the new one”, the accurate answer is that there is one Act, numbered 169 of 2006, and that later amendments changed what it covers and when particular duties commence. You do not comply with a year. You comply with the services you provide, on the commencement that applies to those services. If a supplier's contract defines “Tranche 2” as if it were a separate statute, read the definition before you sign. The Register is the text. The supplier's glossary is not.

Where this page stops
