Legal profession starter kit walkthrough

A legal profession starter kit walkthrough is the order a small law firm follows: open the legal kit, customise the services and risks, and approve it. An accounting kit, or a software login, does not come first.

Quick answer

Use the legal profession starter kit, not the accounting or real estate kit. Delete designated services your firm does not provide, and keep the ones it does, including trust money if you hold it. A partner approves the result, and software comes after that approval. This page does not customise the kit for you.

People search β€œlawyer AML program starter kit” when a two-partner law firm has downloaded three starter kits and is about to edit the accounting one because it was the first file that opened. Checked against AUSTRAC's program starter kits on 4 October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice. This page does not reproduce that guidance. What you still change after you open a kit is how to customise the AUSTRAC starter kit. A template is not a substitute, on AML/CTF program template versus the AUSTRAC starter kit. The sector map is /tranche-2.

Open the legal kit, not the neighbouring one

AUSTRAC publishes sector kits because a law firm's client types are not an accountant's and not an agency's. The legal profession kit is the file with your shape of work: matters, trust money where you hold it, and the companies or transactions you actually assist. Starting in the accounting kit because the headings look familiar is how a firm approves the wrong client story.

The walk is short. Open the legal kit from the starter kit page, mark the services you provide, take out the ones you do not, write the risks that match your matters, and have the senior manager approve it. A file in a folder is not a program until that approval exists.

  • Name the kit. Legal profession, not accountant, conveyancer, or real estate, unless you truly provide that other business.
  • Cut unused services. An untouched kit describes a generic firm. A suburban practice that never holds trust money should not leave that service in as if it does.
  • Keep the services you do provide. Conveyancing assistance, company work, or a trust account stay in if they are real. Deleting them to look smaller does not change the work.
  • Approve, then use software. The login sends the check the program names. It does not choose the kit.

Where the walkthrough stops

This page is the order of the walk. It is not the line-by-line customise note, and it is not a downloaded template. Continue on how to customise the AUSTRAC starter kit and AML/CTF program template versus the AUSTRAC starter kit.

What the client pays

On FreeAML the firm suite is A$0. The firm emails the client a link. Verification is client-pays. On the public list a personal KYC check is A$20 and a company or trust KYB check is A$40. Use KYB when the customer is a company or a trust. Walking the kit is not a per-file charge, and any customer check the approved program later requires is still client-pays. Confirm the live amounts on FreeAML pricing. FreeAML does not customise the legal starter kit or approve the program.
