Showing myID across the desk is not an AML check

myID, the Australian Government digital identity, is not automatically a finished AML check. AUSTRAC allows a digital identity service where the data is reliable and independent, and it tells firms to consider who maintains that data. A client showing a myID screen across a desk does not, on its own, establish the matters initial customer due diligence requires.

Quick answer

Do not accept a flashed myID as the file. If your program relies on a digital identity, you need reliable independent data you can record. Then you still deal with beneficial owners, purpose, and sanctions or politically exposed persons.

Clients offer myID because they already use it for government services and they do not want another check. Checked against AUSTRAC's overview of initial customer due diligence on 5 October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice. This page does not reproduce that guidance. What a proper result contains is what an AML check covers. The electronic document service is DVS and AML. When you must do the work is customer due diligence before the designated service. The sector map is /tranche-2.

What AUSTRAC will let you rely on

AUSTRAC says you can use third-party digital identity services to verify KYC information if the data is reliable and independent. It expects you to consider whether the data is independent and reliable, who maintains it, such as a government body, whether the system is secure and kept up to date, and other factors in your circumstances. myID is a government digital identity, so it is in the neighbourhood of that paragraph. Neighbourhood is not acceptance. You still have to receive data you can rely on, not a glance at someone else's screen, and you still have to establish every matter, not only a name and a date of birth.

A desk-side flash fails the record. You cannot show AUSTRAC a memory of a screen. You cannot show the officer next week what you saw. If a digital identity provider gives you a result into the firm's process, with a time and a reference, that is a different fact. This page does not claim that every myID credential currently produces that result for a reporting entity, and it does not claim that none of them do. Test the path you intend to use. Write the outcome into the program. Until that test exists, email the client the check your program already accepts.

What myID would not finish even if the identity step worked

  • A company or a trust. That is KYB. A director's digital identity is not the entity and not every beneficial owner.
  • The purpose of the matter. Ask it. No identity app knows why the client instructed you.
  • Politically exposed persons and sanctions. A digital identity is not those lists.
  • Someone acting for the client. Authority to act is a separate matter.
  • A suspicion about the money. A strong identity can sit next to a source story that fails. The check does not retire the story.

What the client offersWhat you haveWhat you still need
A screen across the deskA memoryA record, if identity is even established
A result inside your process, if you have tested itSupport for identity, maybeThe other initial CDD matters
Nothing digital, and a refusal to do a checkA gapA reason not to provide the designated service

If a client insists myID should be enough, show them the matters that are still open: who they act for, who acts for them, the purpose of the matter, and, where the customer is a company or a trust, the beneficial owners. Offer the link your program already uses. Do not argue about the app. Do not photograph the screen. A photograph of a digital identity is a copy of an identity credential sitting in a camera roll, which is the opposite of a controlled record. If you later test a proper digital-identity connection and the program is changed to accept it, retire the old sentence. Until that change is written down, the flashed screen changes nothing.

Where this page stops

This page is myID. How a link-based check works, which is the method this site actually offers, is how online identity verification works.

What the client pays

On FreeAML the firm suite is A$0. The firm emails the client a link. Verification is client-pays. On the public list a personal KYC check is A$20 and a company or trust KYB check is A$40. There is no subscription. Confirm the live amounts on FreeAML pricing. FreeAML does not charge a fee to look at myID, because looking at myID is not the product. The client pays when you send a KYC or KYB link.
