Conveyancing AML vs SimpleAML: What “Free” Should Mean

A free conveyancing AML register and a customer due diligence check are different products. Most firms need the paperwork and the verification, not one slogan.

Quick answer

SimpleAML is a free, browser-based compliance record for small conveyancing practices: program, training log, risk notes, and matter records stored on the device. FreeAML is the customer due diligence check: $0 platform, $15 KYC, $35 KYB, client-pays. Use both jobs deliberately. A free register does not verify the identity. A check does not replace the program.

Two different “free” stories

Conveyancers searching for free AML usually land on a document tool or a settlement-stack add-on. SimpleAML’s public positioning is a local browser app: no account, data on the device, built for sole and small practices, including a matter register. That can be a sensible place to keep the program paperwork.

The settlement still needs customer due diligence when the service is designated. FreeAML sends the client a link, they finish on a phone, and you keep the outcome. Client-pays means their card covers the $15 or $35. You do not take on a monthly AML subscription to do that.

Client-pays callout

If the comparison is “what does the firm pay per settlement”, put client-pays in the column. On FreeAML the firm’s cash for that check can be $0. A forms subscription can still be worth it for the documents you already produce. Do not pay twice for the same identity check without telling the client. Prices are on /pricing.

How a conveyancer can use both

  1. Keep the program, training log, and risk notes wherever the practice already stores them — SimpleAML if you want their free register, or your own system.
  2. Enrol on AUSTRAC. The prove-it note is the section 167 guide.
  3. On each in-scope matter, run the check from /aml-check.
  4. Choose client-pays or a disclosed disbursement, and write it on the tax invoice in plain language.
  5. Save the outcome with the matter. A policy template is not the outcome.

What not to believe

  • “Free AML” that never identifies the customer is unfinished.
  • VOI or a forms bundle is not automatically CDD.
  • Two firms on the same conveyance should agree who runs the check so the client is not billed twice in silence.
  • Client-pays is not an AUSTRAC fee.

Client-pays can cover the check. The program still lives with the practice.
