Bookkeeper who also registers ABNs

A bookkeeper who also registers ABNs has two jobs on the invoice, and only some of the work may be a designated service. The ABN form does not answer that.

Quick answer

Registering an ABN is not a label you can hide a company formation inside, and it is not a label that drags ordinary bookkeeping into scope. Split the engagement and test each service against the program. The firm suite does not classify the ABN work. The client pays a check only when the program requires one.

People search “bookkeeper ABN registration AML” when a bookkeeping practice registers ABNs and treats every one of those jobs as either all in scope or all out. Checked against AUSTRAC's professional designated services page on 4 October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice. This page does not reproduce that guidance. The wider bookkeeper question is AML for bookkeepers. The sector map is /tranche-2.

Two jobs, one invoice

Bookkeeper ABN registration AML is the search when the same practice files an ABN and also keeps the books, forms entities, or is asked to help sell the business later. The ABN application is a fact on the file. It is not a switch that turns every client on or every client off.

Write the services on separate lines in the program. Staff should be able to see that Tuesday's job was an ABN and Thursday's job was something else. One blended description is how the designated service disappears.

  • Do not inherit scope from the form. An ABN registration does not, by itself, tell you the customer-due-diligence answer.
  • Do not hide another service inside it. If you also form a company, that work is its own line. The ABN fee does not rename it.
  • Do not drag the books in by accident. Recording past invoices is a different engagement from the service the program may list.
  • Re-test a later request. A client who later asks you to sell the business is a new matter. The old ABN file is not CDD for it.

Sort the engagement, not the software

A sorting aid for a bookkeeper who registers ABNs. This table does not reproduce AUSTRAC's designated-services guidance.

Where the ABN page stops

This page is the ABN registration beside bookkeeping. It is not the decision tree for every designated service. That sits on the designated services decision tree. This page does not say an ABN is never relevant, and it does not say it always is.

What the client pays

On FreeAML the firm suite is A$0. The firm emails the client a link. Verification is client-pays. On the public list a personal KYC check is A$20 and a company or trust KYB check is A$40. Use KYB when the customer is a company or a trust. Classifying an ABN registration is not included in the firm suite. Confirm the live amounts on FreeAML pricing. FreeAML does not decide that registering an ABN is, or is not, a designated service.
