AML/CTF training versus a one-off webinar

AML/CTF training is the program you keep. A one-off webinar can be a session inside it. The webinar is not the program.

Quick answer

AML/CTF training is a program the firm keeps: at the start of the role, again when the work changes, recorded, and specific enough that people can follow this firm's path. A one-off webinar can be one session inside that program. It is not the program.

People search β€œaml ctf training” and land on a webinar with a date and a logo. AUSTRAC's AML/CTF training guidance says you train the people whose work is relevant to your obligations, initially and on an ongoing basis, in a way they can apply. You may use an outside provider. You stay responsible for whether it fits. Checked on 2 October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice. This page does not reproduce that guidance. Scope of the reforms is /tranche-2.

What a webinar often skips

A one-off webinar against the program around it. The webinar can be the session. The firm still owns the rest. This table does not reproduce AUSTRAC's page.

A webinar is allowed. It is not the whole obligation

Buying a session is a reasonable way to start. AUSTRAC allows training from outside the firm. The failure mode is treating the calendar invite as the training program. A generic hour that never mentions your designated services, your customer steps, or who you tell is awareness. Awareness is not the same as training people can apply on Monday.

Who must sit it, when they are not specialists, is AML training for non-specialist staff. Whether the badge at the end is an AML certification, or only a prompt for the firm's register, is AML certification versus an in-house attestation. The training section of the written program sits inside what Tranche 2 firms put in writing.

A shape that survives a question

  1. Name the roles. List who touches a designated service or an AML duty. A quiet title is not an exemption.
  2. Train them as they start. Initial training belongs before they do that work, or as they take it on.
  3. Add the firm piece. Your services, your escalate path, and your tipping-off line. The webinar will not know them.
  4. Attest in the register. Person, session, date, and the next round. That entry is the firm's, even if a host emailed a badge.
  5. Diary a refresh. A new service, a new staff member, or a change in the program is a reason to train again. One quiet year is not a lifetime exemption.

Modules are a session, not a certificate mill

The FreeAML firm suite is A$0. The modules are at Trainings. They are a way to run a session and keep a completion record. They do not decide who must attend, and they do not replace the attestation that the person can follow this practice. FreeAML does not issue an AML certification. The record is not an accreditation.

Customer verification is a different step and is client-pays. The firm emails the client a link. On the public list a personal KYC check is A$20 and a company or trust KYB check is A$40. Confirm the live amounts on FreeAML pricing. Do not send a check because the team watched a webinar. Send it where the program says the matter is in.
